Advancing Health Equity: Overcoming Barriers to Immuno-Oncology in Persons of Color

This 30-minute continuing medical education / continuing laboratory medical education (CME/CMLE) credit-bearing, online, on-demand webcast will provide pathologists, laboratory professionals, and other members of the cancer care team with an increased understanding of health disparities impacting the ability of Black persons and other persons of color with cancer to access I-O therapies.

This webcast will address the following topics:

• The burden of health disparities on Black persons and other persons of color with cancer
• Clinical importance of genetic/molecular test results in Black persons and other persons of color with cancer
• The implications of a pathologist’s unconscious bias on diagnostics and genetic and biomarker differences in tumor biology
• Individual- and systems-level barriers and socioeconomic and cultural factors that contribute to health disparities in Black persons and other persons of color with cancer
• Practical ways that laboratory leaders can improve health equity in Black persons and other persons of color with cancer to improve access to I-O therapies

1. Discuss the importance of immuno-oncology in cancer care
2. Identify disparities in cancer prevalence, diagnosis, and survival for people of color that impact immuno-oncology
3. Discuss individual- and systems-level barriers to accessing biomarker testing, clinical trials, and therapies for people of color
4. Identify practical approaches to overcome the barriers faced by people of color in accessing immuno-oncology-related care
