This session from the 2023 Annual Meeting is presented by Andrea Deyrup, MD, PhD, from Duke University Medical School. Associations between various diseases and socially defined races have been taught to generations of healthcare professionals. While the teaching of these associations may have been well intentioned, the impact has been far from benign. Using the canonical pathology textbook for undergraduate medical education, Robbins Basic Pathology, as an example, the rationale behind deracializing medicine will be addressed in this education session and strategies used for initiating change will be presented, along with the challenges that can arise. Finally, areas for improvement and opportunities to promote individual, institutional and structural transformation will be offered in this education session.
Topics covered include:
Racial disparities and the prevalence of diseases with skewed ranges based on race
Robbins textbook inclusion of socially defined race associated with disease
Historical roots of race erroneously used as a biological construct
Ongoing data-driven analysis of race-based medicine and tools to support appropriate population descriptors
Learning Objectives:
Discuss the scientific flaws inherent in race-based medicine
Identify challenges in removing race-based medicine
Develop strategies to initiate individual, institutional, and systemic change
