This 2021 Annual Meeting session is presented by Melissa P. Upton, MD, FASCP, past-President of ASCP. This session, in memory of longstanding ASCP volunteer, Cindy Johns, highlights 2 attributes of Cindy that she brought to her service to our profession. Dr. Upton worked closely with Cindy Johns and will discuss hope and altruism, how Cindy exemplified them, and how cultivating these traits can enrich and enhance the lives of us all. The talk will incorporate recent scientific discoveries about the neuroscience of hope and altruism, as well as studies that compare groups of people using semi-quantitative studies.

Topics include:

Eight dimensions of wellness
Six principles of trauma-informed care
Trauma-informed leadership
Stress and burnout
Hope as a discipline

Learning objectives:

Describe the neurobiology of hope and altruism.
List 3 ways that differences in hopefulness can affect behavior and patient outcomes.
List a negative outcome during COVID19 for people who score high in altruism and consider an intervention to address this.
