Each step in the handling of a tissue specimen has the potential of altering the final H&E result. This presentation will discuss the major areas in tissue processing and in the H&E staining protocol that can modify the stained appearance of the tissue. Problems discussed include smudgy nuclei, aberrant staining, “soap suds,” haziness, and more. The presentation shows “problem” slides, their respective processing and/or staining schedules, and the steps necessary to correct the problem.

- Improve processing schedules.
