· discuss the differential diagnosis of splenomegaly to guide postmortem ancillary testing;
· describe the risk factors identified in cases of splenic rupture;
· recognize the importance of collecting antemortem hospital blood samples to evaluate the causes of splenomegaly and diagnose hematopoietic disorders; and
· explain to family members how unexpected autopsy findings of malignancy may be a factor in the cause of death.
