Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
· describe the macroscopic appearance of a blood specimen that has been contaminated by intravenous fluids;
· predict various electrolyte and chemistry analytes that would be affected by contamination;
· list the variables of the preanalytic phase of sample collection that may affect chemistry results;
· determine how a set of chemistry results may have been altered; and
recommend the corrective action to be taken to prevent contamination.
