· describe the epidemiology of extended-spectrum ß-lactamase–producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E);
· identify the clinical significance of and treatment options for ESBL-E;
· discuss the limitations of laboratory testing for ESBL-E;
· define the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute’s clinical breakpoint changes and the current College of American Pathologist’s requirement for adoption; and
· describe the antimicrobial stewardship implications of ESBL-E identification.
