·         recognize analytic signs of serum hyperviscosity from common laboratory test results; 
·         explain the basic pathophysiology of disease that can cause the accumulation of proteins in the serum; 
·         describe the critical importance of early recognition of hyperviscosity syndrome; 
·         construct a strategic plan to identify and troubleshoot hyperviscous samples; and 
·         explain the methodology for measuring serum viscosity in the clinical laboratory.
