Upon completion of this activity, you will be able to:
· discuss a case of a strongly positive Kleihauer-Betke test (KBT);
· identify challenges of KBT interpretation and implications of dosage and administration of Rho(D) immune globulin (RhIg) based on KBT results;
· identify consequences of Rh isoimmunization and the importance of antepartum RhIg;
· calculate proper dosages of RhIg to administer postpartum;
· introduce use of the erythrocyte rosette screening test, confirmatory KBT, and flow cytometry studies to identify and quantify fetomaternal hemorrhage;
· identify causes of false-positive and false-negative results and concepts of underestimation and overestimation when using the KBT; and
· suggest strategies for medically treating a patient with a high KBT value.
