·         explain how a robust patient blood management program can assist with difficult discussions regarding appropriateness of blood products and available alternatives;

·         explain the necessity for patient consent and counseling by blood bank and clinical staff as they pertain to patients with nonmedical considerations regarding blood products; and

advise clinicians about alternatives to transfusion of blood and blood products.
